The Galactic Peace Hotel is a five star hotel located in the southern part of the city.

It has both a western and Chinese restaurant and offers a breakfast buffet. It is in a commercial part of the city near some shopping malls. Evidently there is a Walmart in walking distance. The hotel has a nice 25m indoor pool.

The rooms have free internet so I should be able to post on the blog while there. It looks like a really really nice hotel.

Since I’ve already described the hotel that we will be staying at in Guangzhou, I should probably take a look at the two hotels that we’ll be at in Beijing and Nanchang. During our stay in Beijing we’ll be at the Novotel Peace Hotel. It is a four star hotel located near the Wangfujing commercial district. On our first trip to Beijing, we originally were going to stay at the Beijing Peace Hotel but the hotel was booked and with the size of our group we ended up staying at the Beijing Oriental Culture Hotel. It was a nice hotel but not quite as conveniently situated.

It is very near to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City and not far from Beihai Park or the Temple of Heaven. We’ll be able to walk to the Wangfujing branch of Quanjude Restaurant so we will certainly get Peking Duck one evening.

The hotel has an indoor swimming pool so that will be great for the kids. They have a restaurant called the Square which provides an Asian and international buffet with multi-cuisine cook stations. This sounds similar to the restaurants at the hotels we stayed at previously. Last trip we typically ate two meals a day, breakfast at the hotel buffet and dinner at a restaurant somewhere. We would only need snacks during the day to tide us over for dinner.

Here’s a picture of Karen and me on Wangfujing Avenue during our last trip.

The final stop in China will be Guangzhou. All adoptive families go through Guangzhou because they need to visit the U.S. Consulate to get a visa for their newly adopted child. This means staying at the White Swan Hotel on Shamian Island.

The hotel is a five star hotel. The hotel has an indoor waterfall.

It has three very nice restaurants. One is an outdoor restaurant with a buffet where you choose meats and seafood and the staff then grill it and serve it to you. Another is a dim sum restaurant. We quickly learned that Hua Mei liked dim sum.

On arriving at the hotel, each family will find a “Going Home Barbie” in their room as a gift from the White Swan. It’s a Caucasian Barbie doll holding an Asian baby. Mattel only makes these for adoptive parents who stay at the White Swan.

Shamian Island is a sandbank island on the Pearl River. It used to be the safe haven where foreigners gui lao (aka yangguizi) resided during colonial European times. Colonial architecture is still evident on the island.

There are some interesting odd bronze statues dotting the island that depict colonial times.

Here’s an article about the White Swan in the Times.
