We’ve made our packing lists and have started to pack. We will be bringing three suitcases to check in and three carry-ons. The latest forecast for Beijing is upper 40 to low fifties for highs with lows in the upper 20s. For Nanchang, the long term fore cast for the time we will be there will have highs in the 60s and lows in the upper 40s. Guangzhou is in the 70s and 80s. it is nice that we won’t have to worry about winter clothes and we can dress layers in Beijing. We are also packing clothes for Olivia.

Karen began her maternity leave on Friday. She’ll have three months off. Grace and Karen took my dad to an assisted living facility for the three weeks that we will be gone. He’ll be staying in an apartment there and will be in memory care during the day. Grace will be doing her packing this weekend. Hopefully we’ll be in pretty good shape by the end of the weekend.

Based on average daily weather data for Beijing, Nanchang and Guangzhou, we can get an idea of the high and low temperatures that we can expect for our trip and thus pack appropriately.

For Beijing, from Nov 19th to the 23rd, the average high is 47°F and the average low is 30°F. This will be similar to early Nov weather for Minneapolis. A jacket and a sweat shirt will be just about right for the evenings.

For Nanchang, from Nov 23rd to the 29th, the average high is 60°F and the average low is 47°F. This is about the weather that we are currently experiencing in Minneapolis or maybe more early October so short sleeves in the day and jacket in the evening perhaps.

For Guangzhou, from Nov 29th to the Dec 4th, the average high is 72°F and the average low is 57°F. This is early September weather in Minneapolis so I might even bring a pair of shorts along.

Of course when we return to Minneapolis on Dec 4, the average high is 30°F and the average low is 16°F.

Here is a graph of the average weather for Beijing:

For Beijing the average high is 50°F and the average low is 31°F in November. In December the average high is 37°F and the average low is 19°F. The average precipitation for both months is minimal.

Here is a graph of the average weather for Nanchang:

The average high is 63°F and the average low is 50°F in November for Nanchang. In December the average high is 53°F and the average low is 39°F. The average precipitation is a one and a half to two for both months.

Finally here is a graph of the average weather for Guangzhou:

Guangzhou has an average high in November of 75°F and an average low of 60°F. For December, the average high is 68°F with an average low of 52°F. Guangzhou gets less rain than Nanchang, 1.7″ in November and about 1″ in December.

For context, today in Minneapolis, the high was 67°F and the low was 40°F. We probably can pack the clothes that we’ve been wearing this week along with a sweatshirt and jacket for Beijing. It will be quite a difference from the hot and humid weather we experienced when we visited in August and September.
